Orpheus, the son of Apollo, has returned unsuccessful from his journey to Hades in quest of his wife, Eurydice. The animals are drawn by his exquisite lament. Later, he is killed by the frenzied Maenids and as his lyre floats down the river to the sea his music plays on.
